Food Exchange Lists

Food groups for the diabetic diet are referred to as a diabetic food exchange list. Foods that contain approximately the same type of calories will be grouped together. The word exchange means one food can be exchanged for another food within the same group. Since the foods in each group contain similar amount of carbohydrates, protein and fat, the change in blood sugar after the foods digest is similar.
